Questions we often get

What is the corporate tax rate in France?

The standard rate is 25%. Companies with turnover under 10 million euros pay a reduced rate of 15% on the first 42,500 euros of taxable profit each year, and 25% above that.

Does a foreign company need a French VAT number from its first sale?

Generally yes. The revenue threshold that lets small French businesses skip VAT does not apply to companies based abroad. If you sell to French customers, hold stock in France or import into France, you need a French VAT number from the first transaction.

Do we need a fiscal representative in France?

A company based outside the European Union generally has to appoint one, and the representative is jointly liable for its VAT. Companies from countries that have a mutual assistance agreement with France, such as the United Kingdom and Norway, are exempt. Companies based in the EU never need one.

How long does VAT registration take, and how often are returns filed?

Registration goes through the tax office for foreign businesses (SIEE) and can take up to eight weeks, so start before your first invoice is due. Foreign companies file a monthly return (form CA3). After a full year of on-time returns you can ask for quarterly filing if your yearly VAT stays under about 4,000 euros.
